Indigenous Bhutanese products attract large number of visitors at the Giftionery Taipei 2012 held at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall in Taiwan

As the trade fairs are an ideal platform to promote and sell the products besides immensely contributing to forging business linkages and strengthening trade relationships, the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce & Industry has initiated organizing trade fairs as one of the major business promotional activities since last few years.

Upon invitation of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the BCCI for the first time participated together with the 12 exhibitors comprising of artisans, designers, women entrepreneurs and incense manufacturers from Bhutan at the Taipei Gift and Stationery (Giftionery) Fair that took place on 19-22 April 2012 at Taipei World Trade Center, Taiwan. The uniquely set up Bhutan pavilion displayed wide range of indigenous Bhutanese products such as incense sticks, incense powder, herbal tea, bio products, buck wheat, dried mushroom, hand woven textiles, handicrafts, souvenirs, thangka paintings, dhapa from Trashi Yangtse, cane and bamboo products from Kangpara and Kheng that enticed a large number of local and international visitors and wholesale buyers as well.

The core objectives of participating at this fair according to the BCCI are: 1) To explore market opportunities for indigenous Bhutanese products in Taiwan; 2) To establish business linkages with the Taiwanese as well as exhibitors from other countries; 3) To gain exposure at the international market for creative industry products and other indigenous Bhutanese products; 4) To learn from other exhibitors in terms of product design, packaging and marketing strategies and 5) To contribute to hard currency earnings from exports.
Bhutan Pavilion

About 459 companies from across South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Bhutan, Nepal and Europe participated at this mega fair.

The BCCI availed this rare opportunity considering the market potential for Bhutanese products in Taiwan. The cost of participation was cost shared between the BCCI and the exhibitors while the Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts (APIC) sponsored payment for two booths. Upon request of the BCCI, the accommodation and other logistics were supported by the Buddhist Higher Studies and Meditational Centre in Taiwan. All the exhibitors returned home with overwhelming satisfaction as all the sample products valuing US $ 70,000 were sold out to the wholesalers and visitors at the end of the fair.

While most of the exhibitors were selected from Thimphu Craft Bazaar, some were selected from other regions.

The President of TAITRA, Mr. Yuen- Chuan Chao who visited the Bhutan Pavilion was deeply impressed with the Bhutanese products and encouraged the exhibitors to participate in the future exhibitions as well.

The incense manufacturers, thangka painters and herbal tea producer received some orders from the buyers. However, the Bhutanese products need significant improvement in packaging as commented by the buyers. The buyers also advised the exhibitors to develop website for future business contacts as most of the exhibitors do not have websites and even email addresses. The Bhutan Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Taiwan External Trade Development Council will sign MoU sometime this year in order to facilitate promoting business between the two countries.

The BCCI also intends to coordinate Bhutan’s participation at the Singapore Giftionery Fair which will take place from 15-17 August 2012 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Singapore and Taipei Buddhist Appliances and Sculptures Exhibition to be held at the Taipei World Trade Center from 7-10 September 2012.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is preparing to host the 3rd Bhutan Construction Expo 2012 from 13-17 June 2012 and the 3rd Bhutan International Trade Fair from 19-23 September 2012 respectively at the Changlingmithang Stadium parking, Thimphu.

THIMPHU– The recent drawdown in the country’s reserves of Indian Rupees, while causing some significant disturbance in the economy, has also opened our eyes to the challenges that lie ahead for our country. More importantly, it provides an opportunity to rethink the collaborative role that the government and the private sector must play in realising the country’s development goals.

For most of the last 50 years,Bhutanhas been a net importing country – both in goods and services. In the fiscal year 2010-2011, we had a trade deficit of Nu. 23.5 billion, of which Nu. 15.2 billion Alone was in trade withIndia. Such deficits in trade are not sustainable without an offsetting inflow of revenue from exports of goods and services.

While the Rupee shortage was anticipated by the private sector as early as 2009, we were unable to successfully advocate for policies that would significantly increase our foreign currency earnings. It is the view of the Chamber that a combination of new and amended policies will help us get through this crisis and set the economy on a more sustainable path towards development.

Prime among these policy changes is supporting the development of industries that earn foreign currency. In areas such as agro and livestock products, wood-based products, packaged food and beverages, industrial raw materials and minerals, Bhutan currently imports close to Nu. 5.9 billion Worth of goods fromIndia. Policies that help lead to increased production of these goods at home – and at lower costs – will not only ease the demand on the Indian currency by meeting local consumption, but also earn foreign currency through exports. We can further add value to our hydroelectricity output by promoting energy intensive industries whereBhutanhas a comparative advantage.

It is especially important to promote higher exports taking into account the expected withdrawal of foreign aid in the next Five-Year Plan and the commencement of several mega hydroelectric projects in the coming years, which will place additional pressure on our foreign currency reserves. In particular, we must achieve and maintain a comfortable reserve of the Indian currency that does not fall below a minimum line, given that 70% – 80% of our annual trade is withIndia.

Lastly, it is the view of the Chamber that while import of goods, especially in heavy vehicles and equipments, has spiked in the last few years, it is an indication of the private sector responding to opportunities to invest in the hydro projects that have started or will soon start. While this does place pressure on the present Rupee position of the central bank, it is worth noting that these investments will pay off in the future as more wealth from the mega projects is retained in the country. Therefore, the solution is not to prevent our entrepreneurs from responding to incentives in the market, but to find alternative ways to balance our current consumption with future earnings.
